Fast track opportunity leading to Underwriting Manager position with growing carrier. Home office position reporting to CUO, located in the Midwest, in a medium size city with great schools and low cost of living.
Job Summary:
Handle all aspects of the work comp underwriting function with an emphasis on large risk, including handling referrals from underwriters. Develop strategy based on analysis of results, working closely with senior management, underwriters and marketing staff to develop a profitable book while growing with agency force.
Experienced with all aspects of hazard identification and loss control, familiarity with OSHA standards, government reports, workers compensation classification and rating rules spanning multiple states.
Internal auditing of files to ensure quality and adherence to authority levels.
Ability to work with large clients for claim and loss control reviews as necessary. Skilled at negotiating coverage and pricing with agents and sometimes with policyholders to achieve mutually desired results. Guide underwriters relative to effective handling of all aspects of the underwriting process.
A contributor in developing practices and procedures and training staff.
Working with support services and technical services such as loss control, audit and special investigation, all of which are part of the underwriting department.
Ability to monitor and measure territories for goal achievement, risk quality, and client satisfaction.
Involvement with rate and forms filings and monitoring regulatory requirements and issues in conjunction with the Compliance area.
SKILL AND ABILITY PROFILE:
This individual will have a proven background as a leader with a track record of success in workers compensation underwriting for an insurance company. The experience must include some supervisory or management success. Qualities evident will include exceptional analytical skill, excellent interpersonal skills, and an energetic approach and strong desire to achieve a very high level of success and accomplishment. Sound judgment in decision making processes and the ability to support those decisions will be a fundamental skill set. Results oriented with the ability to review and direct to achieve desired results, while maintaining good relationships with staff and agents. This position requires someone with management level business aptitude and high level of motivation.

This position could lead to high level management within the underwriting department for the individual possessing the needed combination of work ethic, mathematical and business expertise, decision making and relationship building skills and track record of achievement.
Requirements:
College degree required. Insurance designation or continuing education in the insurance field is a plus.
5 years minimum experience in workers compensation underwriting with a proven record of success in underwriting and underwriting management.
Supervisory and/or management experience.
Proficiency in results analysis and business management.
Ability to understand and embrace multiple business models.
An effective strategic planner, with emphasis on achieving desired results and continuing to improve results.
Ability to effectively communicate with independent agencies, policyholders, and staff.
